A typhoon - with the strength of a Category 5 hurricane, the highest on the scale - has moved into the Pacific island of Rota. The US National Weather Service, NWS, warns of “catastrophic damage and (a) life-threatening situation.”
Strong winds and whipping rain had already hit Guam and the Northern Mariana Islands - which together have a population of around 210,000. Rota has around 1,500 inhabitants.
Typhoon Bavi has had wind gusts of up to 97 meters per second.
