The announcement comes after pro-European Marcel Ciolacu announced his resignation following Sunday's first round in the Romanian presidential election. None of the government party's candidates received sufficient votes to proceed to the second round.

Predoiu, who is currently the country's interior minister and previously was vice prime minister, represents the right-wing party.

In the first round, EU-skeptic George Simion from the far-right party AUR received over 40 percent of the votes – far ahead of Bucharest's independent liberal mayor Nicosur Dan and PNL's former leader Cirin Antonescu, who each received over 20 percent.

The decisive round will be held on May 18.
