Cars have become stuck in the water masses and several flooded roads in southern Sweden had to be closed during the afternoon.

Already during the morning, yellow and orange warnings for heavy rain and thunderstorms were issued for several locations in the country.

During the morning, a strong rain and thunderstorm weather system moved in over the southern and central parts of the country.

The traffic situation is worst from Halmstad to Båstad. A total of six smaller roads are now closed, says Bengt Olsson, press chief at the Transport Administration, at 5 pm.

The train traffic is not affected at present, he says.

At lunchtime, Ängelholm was heavily affected by the rain, according to Helsingborgs Dagblad. There was a lot of water on Kungsgårdsleden in Ängelholm and water is said to have flowed in through the doors of the ice rink Catena Arena.

A passenger car was stuck in the water under a railway viaduct in the northern parts of Helsingborg municipality, according to HD. Two people who were traveling in the car were able to get out.

Yellow warnings

Today's heavy rain was initially assessed as so severe that an orange warning was issued from Linköping to Halmstad. The bad weather was assessed to be able to cause serious consequences.

There can be major problems with flooding on roads, railways, and in basements. There can be a lot of water in a short time, warned Marie Staerk, meteorologist at SMHI.

SMHI counted on up to 60-90 millimeters of rain in the area.

Despite the occasionally heavy rain, SMHI later withdrew the orange warning, but the yellow warning remained.

There is a lot of rain centered over Götaland, said Marie Staerk at SMHI at lunchtime.

Thunderstorms until evening

On Gotland, a yellow warning for thunderstorms during the afternoon and evening has been issued.

- The thunderstorm can cause disruptions to the power supply and strong gusts of wind can occur, which can lead to trees being felled, says Marie Staerk.

Three levels of weather warnings:

Yellow: Consequences for society, some risks for the general public.

Orange: Serious consequences for society, danger for the general public.

Red: Very serious consequences for society, great danger for the general public.
