The background is an interview in the Danish BT where Bastiens questioned why Wozniacki has not yet clarified whether she intends to make a comeback or if her career is over.
I would fall off my chair if she signs up for the Australian Open in January. It would be a parody if she does it, simply unserious. Why would you give her a wildcard? Her career must be over, said Bastiens.
But Wozniacki does not need a wildcard. After she had her third child, Max, in July, she has the right to compete with so-called protected ranking – a rule that applies up to three years after a birth.
The outburst, however, made the Danish star react strongly.
”For over 20 years, Peter Bastiens has been bullying and attacking me in the media. He talks about things he has no understanding of. Peter, you are a clown. You should know the rules, but it can be difficult to keep track when you have never played at a high level", she writes.
Peter Bastiens himself dismisses the conflict.
She has her opinion. I could not care less about getting into a war of words with her, he says to Ekstra Bladet.
