Both Caroline Andersson and Julia Borgström were involved in the mass crash that occurred 94 kilometres from the finish line in the women's 180-kilometre road race on Saturday. Andersson was taken to hospital while Borgström was fine under the circumstances. Both abandoned the race. Andersson was injured.
"She has a broken collarbone. It's an open fracture, so she needs surgery later. Otherwise, it seems to have stopped at a small hemorrhage in the hip, but the doctors are keeping an eye on it. She is conscious, talking and can communicate, but is tired from painkillers. Otherwise, everything seems okay under the circumstances," says Alexander Wetterhall in the Swedish team management, according to a press release from the Swedish Cycling Federation, and continues:
"The parents are here now, which is great. She also gets help from her team doctor, who she already knows."
Lauretta Hanson, from Australia, was also taken to hospital after the mass crash, according to the Swiss newspaper Blick .
The race continued after the crash, without the Swedes. Favourite Demi Vollering of the Netherlands, who won both the Tour de France and the Giro d'Italia earlier this year, took gold ahead of Katarzyna Niewiadoma-Phinney of Poland and Elisa Longo Borghini of Italy.
