The Liberals are going to form a government in Canada, but it is still unclear whether the party will get a majority in parliament. The party looked set for a clear defeat, but the dynamics have changed radically due to growing concern over trade wars with the USA and the southern neighbor's president Donald Trump.

In his victory speech, Mark Carney emphasizes the importance of unity in the face of threats from Washington.

We have gotten over the shock of American betrayal, but we should never forget the lessons, he says.

He says the USA wants Canada's land, resources, and water.

This is not an empty threat. President Trump is trying to break us so that America can own us. It will never – it will never, ever happen. But we must also acknowledge the reality that our world has fundamentally changed.

"Change is needed"

Mark Carney's challenger for the prime minister post Pierre Poilievre acknowledges defeat in a speech to his supporters.

We are aware that we have not crossed the finish line yet.

We know that change is needed, but change is difficult to achieve. It takes time. It requires work. And that's why we must learn from this evening – so that we can get an even better result next time Canadians decide on the country's future.

Pierre Poilievre also loses his seat in parliament after losing his constituency in Carleton, Ontario, which he has represented for 20 years, according to Canadian media.

Sharp response

Donald Trump repeated on election day once again that Canada would be better off as a state in the USA. That was too much even for Poilievre, who gave a sharp response to the American president.

"President Trump, stay away from our election. The only ones who decide on Canada's future are the Canadian people at the ballot box", he wrote on X.
