Russian oil company Lukoil has found a buyer for its international operations: the private equity firm Carlyle.

Lukoil's foreign assets have been for sale for some time.

At one stage, Gunvor was approached by Swedish oil billionaire Torbjörn Törnqvist as a potential buyer, but the bid was withdrawn. This followed a US Treasury Department post on social media saying it would never approve a license for Gunvor, calling the company "the Kremlin's puppet".

The deal with Carlyle is not yet complete, as it still requires approval from various authorities. Lukoil is therefore continuing negotiations with other potential buyers, Bloomberg reports.
