Anaheim turned a 0–2 deficit on the road in Edmonton into a 3–2 lead in the second period. After just 19 seconds, Troy Terry reduced the deficit on a goalie rebound after center Leo Carlsson's shot.
After less than five minutes, Carlsson himself scored to make it 2-2 - the 21-year-old Swede's first playoff goal of his career. Despite a 3-2 lead heading into the final period, Edmonton was able to turn the game around to win.
Edmonton veteran defenseman Mattias Ekholm was credited with an assist on Jason Dickinson's 3-3 goal 11:30 into the third period. Ekholm fired a heavy shot and two-goal scorer Dickinson put the goalie's rebound away.
The game then looked bound for overtime, but Kasperi Kapanen scored his second goal of the night. Star player Leon Draisaitl was heavily involved in the winning goal after leading the attack. The German was back on the ice after missing the last 14 regular-season games due to injury.
Edmonton is chasing its third straight Stanley Cup Final appearance. The last two have been lost to Florida, who missed the playoffs this season.
For Anaheim, it was the first playoff game since 2018. The first round is a best-of-seven series.
