The letter is dated 1737 and was sent by Linnaeus to the German physician and botanist Christian Gottlieb Ludwig. On Monday evening, it was sold at Stockholms Auktionsverk's international auction "The Rare Books, Maps & Manuscripts Sale" for 1,875,000 kronor, a record for a Swedish letter.
In the letter, written in Amsterdam, Linnaeus discusses his botanical works, plant species, and the development of the classification system that would make him world-famous.
