Cargo Ship Sinks After Hitting Mine in Strait of Hormuz, Iran Says

A cargo ship sank on Wednesday after hitting a mine in the Strait of Hormuz, Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps said, according to the Spanish news agency EFE.

According to the Revolutionary Guard, the ship attempted to take an “unauthorized” route through the Strait of Hormuz.

"A container ship attempting to navigate a dangerous and unauthorized route in the Strait of Hormuz caught fire shortly after hitting a naval mine," the Revolutionary Guard said in a statement carried by the state-run Mehr news agency.

According to the Revolutionary Guard, the ship was carrying more than 2,500 containers, which are now floating in the strait.

There is no information on the condition of the crew.
