This was stated by the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) on Tuesday.
"It has been reported that a cargo ship in the southern Red Sea has been hit by an unknown projectile, resulting in injuries or deaths," the authority said in a statement.
The statement came as a Yemeni coast guard source said a ship near the strait had been attacked by the Iran-backed Houthi rebels, killing three crew members.
The Houthi movement began a naval blockade of Saudi Arabia in July and has attacked Saudi tankers in the Red Sea in parallel with Iran's blockade of the Strait of Hormuz.
