Eight people have boarded and taken control of a cargo ship near Marraye in Somalia, according to the British UKMTO and the EU's MSCIO, which both monitor maritime traffic.

The crew is currently safe, MSCIO said without revealing the name of the ship.

Pirates were active off the coast of Somalia from around 2000 until 2011. After that, pirate activity declined, thanks in part to international efforts.

This year, however, Somali pirates have been active again. In the spring, three ships were hijacked and held off the coast of Somalia, and in July, a cargo ship carrying chemicals was seized in Yemeni waters and taken to the Somali coast.
