The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations reported on Sunday afternoon that a cargo ship traveling near the strait had been attacked off Sirik in southeastern Iran. No one on board was injured, according to the British military organization.
No country or group has claimed responsibility for the attack; its designation and country of origin are unknown.
Iran claims that it has full control over traffic in the Strait of Hormuz and states that it allows ships to pass - unless they belong to the US or Israel - if a fee is paid.
The US says it is blocking traffic to and from the strait.
