This is according to the industry organization Acea in a press release.
Electric alternatives, together with new tax rebates and support programs in several major EU countries, are driving development.
So-called hybrid models, which can run on both battery and fossil fuels, were the most popular option, with a market share of 38.2 percent from January to April 2026. Battery-electric cars reached a market share of 19.7 percent, while gasoline cars were at 22.5 percent during the period.
At the same time, the proportion of diesel cars was down to 7.7 percent.
