In total, 24,292 new passenger cars were recorded last month, an increase of 10.5 percent compared to April last year. So far in 2025, the number of registrations has increased by 7 percent, according to the monthly statistics from Mobility Sweden.

"The geopolitical uncertainty and threats of trade barriers have not yet left their mark on new passenger car registrations," writes Mobility Sweden in a press release.

The share of electric cars in total new registrations is increasing. But for electric car giant Tesla, the downturn continues. In April, it was really bad, even though monthly figures can fluctuate greatly.

The number of newly registered Teslas landed at 203 units in April, down from the same month last year, 80 percent fewer. The share of total electric car sales plummeted from 15 percent last year to just over two percent now in April.

The sales downturn for Tesla has been ongoing throughout the spring in large parts of the world and has been linked to Tesla founder and CEO Elon Musk's political statements and actions. He is, among other things, the head of US President Donald Trump's unit, Doge, for dismantling the American state apparatus.

By far the most electric cars on the Swedish market come from Volvo and Volkswagen.
