According to the police, dozens of people were injured in the incident, some seriously.

Earlier, it was reported that nine people had been killed, but the police confirmed at a press conference on Sunday evening Swedish time that eleven people had lost their lives.

This is the darkest day in Vancouver's history, says Acting Police Chief Steve Rai.

The car, a black SUV, plowed into a crowd at a Filipino street festival shortly after 8 pm local time on Saturday evening. Eyewitness accounts on social media show a street where dozens of paramedics are running to take care of the injured. On both sides of the street where the car drove, food stalls can be seen, several of them hit.

The driver, a 30-year-old man from Vancouver, was apprehended by private individuals at the scene and is known to the police due to his history of mental health issues, according to Steve Rai.

"People flying"

It sounded like someone was revving an engine, but I didn't understand why because there were still lots of people everywhere. It was so unbelievable, says Yoseb Vardeh, who worked in his food truck at the scene, to the Vancouver Sun.

Then I looked up and saw people flying. It happened so fast. I got out of my food truck and looked down and saw bodies everywhere. He (the driver) drove through the entire street, right through the middle of the street.

A witness tells the Canadian public service company CBC that the car drove into the packed street just after a concert had ended. Several cars had driven to and from the location during the day, and a temporary barrier had been moved.

Increased speed

At first, it drove slowly, but then it increased its speed. When we realized he had hit someone, he accelerated and hit hundreds of people. It was like seeing a bowling ball hit the pins and how the pins just flew into the air. Bodies flew. It just kept going. People screamed and tried to get away.

Canada's Prime Minister Mark Carney – who is postponing planned campaign stops ahead of Monday's parliamentary election in the country – says while the investigation is ongoing that there are no indications of an "active threat against Canadians".

An investigation is underway to determine how and why this horrific attack occurred. The authorities have confirmed that one person has been arrested and it is believed that he acted alone, says Carney
