The incident occurred in the East Hollywood district during the night towards Saturday. When police and rescue services arrived at the scene, onlookers had dragged the driver out of the car and attacked him. One of them had also shot the driver, according to the police for BBC. The driver was taken to hospital and will be placed in custody.

"He was transported to the hospital, he is undergoing surgery, he is in stable condition. He is not free to leave, he is in custody with the Los Angeles police and we are looking at charges such as attempted murder and assault with a deadly weapon at this time", the police say to CBS News.

"Chaotic scene"

Seven people are being treated for critical injuries and six people for serious injuries. An additional 17 people were injured lightly in the incident. Among the injured are 18 women and twelve men, all in their 20s and 30s.

It was a very chaotic scene, said Adam Van Gerpen to reporters who were on the scene.

Potentially intentional act

The police have not yet determined the cause of the incident, but much indicates that it was intentional. To NBC News, a police officer says that they could not determine if the driver was intoxicated or not due to his condition.

In a statement, Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass calls the incident "a heartbreaking tragedy".

"The hearts of Los Angeles are with all the victims who were affected this morning – a full investigation of what happened is underway", said Bass according to BBC.
