The captain of the merchant ship is in custody, and his defence lawyer conveyed the man's thoughts on Monday morning.
"Two human lives have been lost. What he is saying is that it is a terrible event," the man's defence lawyer Taavi Tuula said.
The man still denies the crime.
He does not question that he is the commander in any way, but he believes that he was not responsible for this accident, says Taavi Tuula.
Three interviews have been held with the man regarding the incident, which led to the deaths of a woman and a child.
The plan is to hold another interrogation with the captain, who is suspected of causing death on probable grounds. He was taken into custody on Sunday.
He is clearly affected. He thinks about the incident a lot, but overall I think he is handling it well, says Tuula.
