The Canadian prime minister calls the situation serious after Donald Trump's tariff threat and reiterates that Greenland's future is up to Denmark and Greenland.

"It's a serious situation. We are concerned about this escalation," Prime Minister Mark Carney said on Sunday in Qatar, where he had traveled after visiting China.

On Saturday, US President Trump threatened eight European countries, including Sweden, with tariffs if the US is not allowed to buy Greenland.

Carney again said it is up to Denmark and Greenland to decide the island's future.

We will always support the sovereignty and territorial integrity of countries, regardless of their geographical location.

Carney will continue on to the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, this week.

When asked what he would say about the matter to Trump, who is also expected at Davos, Carney replied:

I will say everything I just said.
