Canada: Talks with Xi a “turning point”

Friday's talks with Chinese leader Xi Jinping were a "turning point" in the relationship between the countries, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said in the South Korean city of Gyeongju.

The relationship between Canada and China has been very poor in recent years, but both are struggling with high punitive tariffs on export goods imposed by US President Donald Trump.

Friday's meeting was the first formal talks between the countries' leaders since 2017.

We have now opened a path forward to address current issues,” Carney said.

Our overall discussion was constructive.
