The Canadian government on Thursday signed an agreement to build a major oil pipeline after a period of resistance from the province of British Columbia.

The pipeline is intended to connect the oil-rich province of Alberta with the Pacific coast, and aims to give Canada expanded access to Asian export markets.

The move is expected to help reduce Canada's economic dependence on the United States.
