Canada on Friday removed Syria from its list of countries that support terrorism. “These decisions were not made lightly,” Canada’s foreign affairs department said in a statement.

With these measures, Canada joins a number of countries that have eased sanctions against Syria.

Syria's interim president, Ahmed al-Sharaa, was the former leader of the Islamist rebel group HTS when it led the overthrow of the country's dictator Bashar al-Assad. Canada is now also choosing to lift HTS' designation as a "terrorist organization," despite the group having been officially disbanded.

Canada's foreign affairs department said in a statement that the measures were "in line" with the country's allies, including the UK and the US, and that they "follow the efforts of the Syrian transitional government to promote stability in Syria."
