Canada is facing a trade war with the USA, and the country's southern neighbor came into focus when Mark Carney in Ottawa called for an election about a month ago.
The country, he says, needs a strong government when it can no longer trust the USA.
President Trump claims that Canada is not a real country. He wants to break us down so that the USA can own us. We will not let that happen. We have gotten over the immediate shock of the betrayal, but we will never forget.
We have learned our lesson. We have learned that we cannot control the president, but we can control our own destiny.
No Visit
Carney was elected earlier in March as Justin Trudeau's successor as party leader for The Liberals, and thus also as prime minister.
He broke a tradition when he chose not to make his first foreign trip to the USA, but instead a visit to Europe with stops in Paris and London.
The rival Conservative Party has had an advantage in opinion polls since last year. But support for The Liberals has increased as Canadians have rallied behind their leaders in response to Donald Trump's tariffs, politics, and verbal attacks.
Trump: Don't Care
Carney makes a point of trying to link the Conservative Party to the American president and says that his political opponents are backing Trump while he stands for a government for all Canadians.
Trump, who according to the news agency AFP has not yet spoken with Carney, called the predecessor Trudeau a "governor" and claims that the upcoming election is not important to him.
I don't care who wins up there, he said last week according to AFP.
