Call of Duty to remove Seoul crowd crush footage after families’ outcry

A video clip showing the aftermath of the 2022 crowd crush in Seoul, South Korea, has been removed from the latest edition of "Call of Duty."

The scene will be removed in an update in November, the BBC reports.

The announcement comes after relatives of victims said they were “horrified” that real news footage - showing covered bodies in the street and life-saving efforts - was used in a sequence in the game.

The disaster occurred when panic broke out during a Halloween celebration in the Seoul district of Itaewon four years ago. Nearly 160 people were crushed or suffocated to death.

“Using such an event in a game made for entertainment is inherently inappropriate,” the families wrote in a statement, according to the BBC.

“Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4” depicts a fictional North Korean invasion of South Korea.

Publisher Activision apologized and said the intention was never to “trivialize” the stampede.
