In total, five people, two pairs of tourists from Israel and the UK, as well as an employee, were in the gondola when it crashed to the ground. The injured person is reported in local media to be one of the tourists from Israel.
The gondola was near the top of Monte Faito mountain – a popular viewpoint over the Bay of Naples and Vesuvius – when the accident occurred. Another gondola that was on its way down from the mountain was saved thanks to a functioning emergency brake, and eleven people were rescued from it.
Initially, one person was missing, but was later found dead, although the search efforts were hampered by weather and fog.
The cable car opened recently for the season, ten days ago, reportedly without any safety concerns during the inspection. The police have, according to local media, launched a criminal investigation.
