The investigation into the vessel suspected of involvement in the serious sabotage of a communications cable between Sweden and Latvia in the Baltic Sea is being closed down.

The ship's anchor damaged the cable, but not intentionally, according to prosecutor Mars Ljungqvist.

"The investigation clearly shows that the cable break was caused by a combination of harsh weather, technical deficiencies and suspected inadequate seamanship on the ship in question", says Ljungqvist in a press release from the Prosecution Authority.

The damage to the cable was discovered on January 26 this year. It was one of several notable cases where cables were damaged under unclear circumstances between November 2023 and January 2025.
