The single-vehicle accident involving a double-decker bus occurred at around 4:30 p.m. on Monday.
"It is a serious accident, given that a bus carrying several people has overturned," says an operator with the rescue services.
A large operation involving rescue services, ambulances and police was sent to the scene. One of the Swedish Maritime Administration’s helicopters also took part in the operation, according to the rescue services.
More than 40 people were affected by the accident, about ten of whom are seriously injured, Region Kronoberg (regional health authority) says on its website.
Taken to several hospitals
The injured have been taken to hospitals in Växjö, Ljungby and Karlskrona.
"We are preparing key parts of the hospitals, such as the intensive care units, surgical departments and X-ray departments," the region wrote shortly after the accident.
The region, which has gone into emergency mode, has arranged crisis support for those affected and their relatives.
The bus that overturned was operated by Länstrafiken in Kronoberg. Traffic director Pär Welander has no information about how the accident happened and has not spoken to the bus driver.
We have had buses at the scene that have taken people with minor injuries to, among other places, the health centre in Växjö and Ljungby Hospital, he tells TT.
Major traffic disruption
Police will question the driver and passengers to investigate the cause of the accident.
The operation is still ongoing, and we will interview the injured as soon as possible, says police spokesperson Filip Annas.
According to the Swedish Transport Administration, the accident will cause major traffic disruption, and traffic will be rerouted. There is no forecast for when the road can be reopened.
