About 50 people were on board the bus, which overturned in the ditch on E4 in the height of Tallboda in Linköping at 15.45 on Thursday afternoon.
A total of 17 people were taken to hospital after the accident, of which two with "serious but not life-threatening injuries", writes Region Östergötland in a press release. The others were slightly injured or escaped unharmed. The ages of the injured have not been communicated.
The police classify the incident as causing bodily harm and negligence in traffic.
Emergency situation
Region Östergötland went into emergency mode after the accident, but it was closed at 19 o'clock. The affected were taken to Vrinnevisjukhuset in Norrköping and the university hospital in Linköping.
Linköping University's press service tells TT that it is a hired campus bus that students and employees can travel with. The university's crisis management was activated.
We have been able to ascertain that it is a Liu bus and therefore we know that it is about those affected from us, both students and employees, says press chief Anna-Karin Thorstensson.
The university is organizing a gathering place to provide support and care to those affected.
This type of incident always causes concern and we inform to the extent we can in our internal channels to our students and employees, says Thorstensson.
To be investigated
The police announced after the accident that the bus will be salvaged and seized.
We will investigate the accident to see how it happened, says police spokesperson Olle Älveroth.
One of the passengers who escaped unharmed describes the bus journey to the newspaper Corren as normal until the accident occurred.
Traffic was stopped in one direction in connection with the accident, which occurred at 15.45. The rescue service reported just before 17 o'clock that the operation had been completed.
