El Salvador's parliament, where Bukele's party has a supermajority, passed a constitutional reform in 2025 to eliminate presidential term limits, a move that has been criticised by legal experts. Now, most signs are that Bukele will be given another six years in power.
Bukele has become popular for his tough crackdown on gang crime and violence. However, Bukele and his government have also been criticised over the imprisonment of many innocent people, including minors, as the government has implemented its tough policy on crime.
The presidential election will be held in February 2027.
