Montreal had several chances to take the lead early in the match, but a solid Alex Lyon in goal for Buffalo meant it was Buffalo who took a 2–1 lead after the first period.

The second period produced the same result, and after a goalless third period, the final score was 4–2.

Worryingly for Buffalo, Swedish captain Rasmus Dahlin limped off the ice in the first period after blocking a shot from Montreal's Jake Evans. Dahlin later returned to the bench but the 26-year-old did not see any more playing time.

Quarterfinals:

Buffalo – Montreal 4–2 (Buffalo leads series 1–0)

Vegas – Anaheim 1–3 (series tied 1–1)
