Visiting Boston had the lead in the game for a long time, including Elias Lindholm's 2-0 goal at the beginning of the third period.

Buffalo - playing in its first Stanley Cup game in 15 years - had a whopping 27 shots in the first two periods without scoring on Boston goalie Jeremy Swayman. It wasn't until 12:01 of the final period that the scoring broke loose, with four goals in the final minutes.

Boston managed to reduce the lead to 3–4 with eight seconds left, but never got any closer than that.
