All seven members - RM, Jin, Suga, J-Hope, Jimin, V and Jungkook - posted the same statement on their Instagram accounts on Wednesday:
"We have decided not to enter the Grammy Awards this year. We hope that our music can be heard and loved for what it is, rather than being divided by region or language."
The announcement comes just over a month after the gala's organizers, the Recording Academy, introduced a new category for best Asian pop music performance, Variety writes.
Grammy executive Harvey Mason Jr. said in a statement that he regrets BTS's decision not to participate, but that he respects it. He also clarified that they could have entered larger categories such as record of the year, album of the year or song of the year.
"These categories remain open to all eligible recordings, regardless of genre. Being nominated in a genre category and a main category are not mutually exclusive. Artists are absolutely welcome to enter both."
BTS has been nominated for Grammys before, including in the categories of best pop duo/group performance and best music video, but has never won.
The group released its fifth studio album, "Arirang," in March.
