According to a press release, the Commission is concerned that Meta's new policy, adopted in October 2025, risks "preventing third-party AI providers from offering their services via Whatsapp."
The Financial Times reported earlier this morning that the investigation was underway, something Meta did not want to comment on.
The investigation will apply to the entire European Economic Area with the exception of Italy. Italian authorities have previously been investigating the same issue, an investigation that Meta has rejected as unfounded.
