The sinkhole in Godstone in the United Kingdom was discovered on Monday, grew in size and depth, and continued to grow even more. To the villagers' amazement, it was as big as a blue whale on Wednesday and measured over 20 meters in length.
A second hole, on the same street in the village in Surrey in southeastern England, was discovered simultaneously on Wednesday. The barriers had to be extended, and additional families were forced to leave their homes near already evacuated quarters.
It's quite crazy, but I'm trying to stay calm, says Shane Fry, whose garage and workshop are a few hundred meters from the sinkhole.
No one was injured when the sinkholes occurred, and the cause remains a mystery.
