The Bank of England is keeping its key interest rate unchanged at 4.0 percent. The announcement was expected, according to a compilation of forecasts compiled by Bloomberg.

It was by a narrow majority that an unchanged interest rate was voted through at the Bank of England's latest monetary policy meeting. Five members voted, as expected, to leave the rate unchanged, but four voted for a 25 basis point cut.

"We still believe that the interest rate can be gradually lowered, but we need to be sure that inflation is on track," says central bank governor Andrew Bailey in a comment.
