According to UKMTO, the ship reported that it was “under attack by unknown, armed assailants” approximately 55 kilometers southwest of the port city of Hodeidah.
A smaller boat approached and opened fire, which was returned by personnel on the bulk carrier. The boat then returned to a larger vessel approximately 4 kilometers away, according to UKMTO.
No group has claimed responsibility for the attack. Yemen's Houthi movement has threatened to resume attacks on ships but has so far not done so.
Somali pirates have also been active farther afield in the Gulf of Aden recently.
“Ships are urged to sail with caution and report any suspicious activity to UKMTO,” the organization writes on X.
