A British couple has been sentenced to ten years in prison in Iran, accused of espionage.

The couple, both in their 50s, were arrested in January last year while traveling through Iran as part of a motorcycle trip around the world. They have been imprisoned since then, accused of espionage. The couple deny all charges.

"My parents have now been sentenced to ten years in prison after a trial that lasted only three hours, during which they were not allowed to defend themselves," the couple's son Joe Bennett said in a statement.

British Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper called the verdict "absolutely appalling" and said the case will be "pursued relentlessly" until the couple are released and returned to the UK.
