The couple Reynolds, 80 and 75 years old, were arrested seven months ago on unclear grounds and have since been held imprisoned without any formal charges being brought against them.
They have lived and worked in Afghanistan for over 18 years, where they have run schools and been involved in education projects in the country's poor Bamiyan province. After the Taliban's takeover in 2021, the couple chose to stay in the country.
The release is confirmed by the ultra-conservative Taliban regime. The United Kingdom is reported to have received mediation assistance from Qatar in the negotiations to get the couple released, writes AP.
As recently as July, UN representatives warned that the elderly couple's physical and mental health was deteriorating at a rapid pace.
