The family stated in a press release that Penelope Keith died of complications from cancer at her home in Surrey, where she had lived for over 50 years.
Penelope Keith was known for her roles in the British television series "Life is Green" and "Reverse Roles", and won a British Bafta in 1977 for her role as the snobbish Margo Leadbetter in "Life is Green".
In an interview with the Daily Mail, Penelope Keith expressed her joy in making people laugh, the BBC reports.
“Humor is power and a good force, because if you can laugh, not least at yourself, you can also understand things better,” Keith said in the interview.
Among the condolences on social media, former Culture Secretary Jeremy Hunt is seen expressing his sadness and praising Penelope Keith's acting efforts.
Author Lissa Evans is also among those who praise Keith's efforts as Margo Leadbetter.
"Margo Leadbetter was snobbish, humorless, and privileged, and Penelope Keith managed to make her one of the most beloved (and strangely vulnerable) characters ever seen in a sitcom," Evans writes in a post on X .
Evans adds that Keith had rare precision.
"She delivered every line as if it were a jeweled crown on a velvet pillow. A true genius."
