The world is more dangerous and unstable than it has been for decades, Starmer says as he presents the new defence budget. The increase of 15 billion pounds takes defence spending to almost 300 billion pounds, equivalent to over 3,800 billion Swedish kronor, over the next four years, British media report.
Starmer emphasises that defence spending must not be a "bottomless pit."
"We can't just spend more. We have to spend better," he says.
According to Starmer, the initiative will be financed by postponing certain road and energy projects.
