"We stand ready to lift relevant sanctions in response to clear, verifiable steps by Iran regarding its nuclear program. We will work intensively with the United States, Iran and regional partners to seize this opportunity, maintain momentum and achieve a long-term diplomatic solution," the European countries said in a joint statement.
They also said that "Iran must never acquire nuclear weapons."
The Iranian news agency Mehr also reported that the United States will release $12 billion in frozen Iranian assets before further negotiations begin. A document cited by the news agency said $24 billion would be released during a 60-day negotiation period, which begins after the countries sign the memorandum of understanding.
"Half of this amount must be made available to Iran before negotiations begin," the news agency said, according to AFP. The information has not been officially confirmed.
