Mitte appeared in 56 of the series’ 62 episodes and became close to Bryan Cranston. He was just 14 when he was cast as Walter White Jr., a “role he played with such joy and enthusiasm,” Cranston writes.

He says it feels especially heavy knowing that RJ Mitte took his own life, a fact that Variety has confirmed.

A few weeks ago, they tried to find time to meet for lunch: “I don’t know if that lunch could have changed his future... But I know that I loved him and really appreciated spending time with him during the years on the show, and even after the spotlight on ‘Breaking Bad’ had faded,” Cranston writes.

RJ Mitte was 34.
