The proposal for what should apply to police and other authorities has been debated for several years and is called "chat control" by critics who believe it goes too far.
While waiting for a more long-term regulatory framework to be agreed, an extension of the current rules has been proposed. But here too, the Council of Ministers and Parliament remain far apart. Now, instead, the current permit risks expiring at the beginning of April.
“Today's developments create a vacuum, which ... will have consequences for the possibilities of rescuing victims of these terrible crimes,” a spokesperson for the Cyprus presidency of the Council of Ministers wrote in a statement.
