At least 21 people were killed and over 50 people were injured in an attack on vehicles on a highway in the Cauca region in the southwest of the country.

On Wednesday, EMC - which broke away from the leftist guerrilla FARC when the latter laid down its arms in a historic peace agreement in 2016 - announced that the attack was due to a “tactical error” during the ongoing election campaign ahead of the presidential election on May 31.

"It is with deep sadness that we take political responsibility for this tactical error that cannot be justified in any way," EMC wrote in a statement.
