Brad Pitt Trained Two Years for Realistic Formula 1 Film

For Brad Pitt, it has always been a dream to make a film about Formula 1. He compares the racing sport to "a religion". That we as actors could just get a glimpse of what it's like in reality was fantastic. We were like tourists in an ecosystem.

Pitt, director Joseph Kosinski and some of the other actors talk about the filming during a digital press conference from Mexico City. The film is called, not unexpectedly, "F1" and is about how a former Formula 1 driver comes back from retirement to become a mentor to a new young and promising driver.

Formula 1 world is full of stories, every individual has their goals, their strength. My character is a person who thought he was done, but now comes back. It's an underdog story, about how you fight within the rules, says Brad Pitt.

The actors and director Joseph Kosinski talk about how they themselves drove the cars.

In each car, we had four small cameras that constantly recorded the actors' faces. You can see that it really happens, that they drive at 180 kilometers per hour. When you see Brad, he really concentrates on the driving, we give the audience an experience, says Joseph Kosinski.

Long training

Brad Pitt trained for two years before filming, he says.

It couldn't be faked. We wanted to make the most realistic racing film that has ever been made. When I got the offer, it was obvious that I would say yes.

He got great help from the real "Formula 1 circus", and talks about how they could film during real competitions.

We contacted the drivers early on to get their trust and get them to feel the respect we feel for them.

A small role

The multiple Formula 1 winner Lewis Hamilton is one of the film's producers and also has a small role.

To have the opportunity to talk to him, to take part in his experiences... he knows everything, he could immediately point out if something felt wrong. He is a gentleman and a fantastic person.
