It was at the end of September that the boy was arrested near one of Stureplan's exclusive nightclubs in central Stockholm. He had a semi-automatic pistol on him.

The boy, who had just turned 16, is now being prosecuted at the Stockholm District Court for preparation for murder, aggravated weapons offense, and minor narcotics offense.

According to the indictment, the boy, from Dalarna, was sent to murder a 25-year-old identified gang leader in a criminal network in southern Stockholm.

A 21-year-old man from Stockholm is being held in custody in the same case, suspected of incitement to aggravated weapons offense and incitement to preparation for murder.

Corrected: An earlier version of the text contained an incorrect description of the weapon.
