Most of the victims were in open fields or other exposed locations when a storm with torrential rain and lightning suddenly struck.
Among the dead is a ten-year-old boy who was struck outside his house, Sky News reports, citing local media. Several more people have been injured, some of them critically.
Hundreds of people die in lightning strikes in Bangladesh every year. In May 2016, for example, 82 Bangladeshis were killed by lightning in a single day.
Experts have linked the increase in deaths to deforestation, as tall trees that previously prevented lightning from reaching the ground have been cut down.
