Botkyrka to introduce language testing for school staff

Botkyrka municipality introduces language tests for all staff in elementary school, reports Dagens Nyheter. As far as we know, we are the first in the country to do this, says Helena Mellström, communications officer at the education administration, to the newspaper.

The municipality was the first in the country to introduce language tests for employment in preschools in 2021. Now, politicians want to introduce language tests for staff also in elementary schools. During the spring of next year, the language test can start being used in recruitment.

Botkyrka municipality has the highest proportion of foreign-born residents in the country, with over 40 percent of the population born abroad.

This means that challenges related to integration and immigration arise faster in Botkyrka than elsewhere, says Willy Viitala (M), chairman of the education committee, to DN.

According to Viitala, it is also difficult to recruit qualified teachers to schools in Botkyrka's more vulnerable areas. Language tests are part of improving for students in those schools.

We have pedagogical segregation in Botkyrka that we are trying to address in different ways.
