A borrower residing in the USA is to pay back 1.2 million kronor to CSN. This after CSN has taken the person to court in Florida, USA.

”We have been in contact with the borrower and sent reminders and urged payment that has always been opposed. In the end, a lawsuit was the last tool we had to collect the debt”, says Helena Fällman, official lawyer at CSN's legal department in a press release.

The background is that the person had a larger study debt after foreign studies in the USA for over 20 years ago. Despite demands and reminders, the borrower has not paid on their debt since 2008 when he claimed that the debt was statute-barred.

The trial began in September 2024 and in August the case was decided in CSN's favor.

The borrower must now pay back the entire debt as well as some costs related to the lawsuit.

”This is important for CSN's continued opportunities to collect debts in the USA. We always try to get a voluntary payment but if the borrower refuses, we take the legal route to get back the money that the state has lent out. It is important for the credibility of the student support system that money is paid back”, says Helena Fällman.
