According to Bolsonaro's doctor at the hospital in the capital Brasilia, his blood pressure and liver values have deteriorated. The 70-year-old, who was president from 2019 to 2022, has had recurring health problems since he was stabbed in the abdomen at an election rally in 2018.

At the hospital, he was visited on Wednesday by a prosecutor's assistant who handed him a legal summons. A video shows how Bolsonaro becomes enraged when he learns that he only has a few days to prepare his initial defense before the trial where he is accused of attempting to stage a coup after the election defeat in 2022.

I have five days to prepare my defense? Five days? he screamed, while nurses urged him to calm down because his blood pressure was high.

The trial will be the first, since Brazil became a democracy in 1985, where a former leader of the country is accused of attempting to seize power.

Bolsonaro risks a long prison sentence and being barred from running in next year's presidential election, something he had hoped to do.
